Unveiling the Essence of Laos in the Skies In the realm of Southeast Asian aviation, Lao Airlines stands as a regional gem, with roots tracing back to 1976. As the national airline of Laos, its headquarters grace the capital city of Vientiane. Beyond its borders, Lao Airlines extends its wings across a diverse network, connecting not only domestic destinations but also venturing into regional realms like Cambodia, China, Thailand, Vietnam, and Korea. Operating with a fleet adorned by Airbus 320 and ATR72, this airline paints the skies with the colours of Laos. Not tied to any global alliances.

Initially drawn to the allure of a slow boat journey down the Mekong River, my plans took an unexpected turn fueled by the insights from fellow travellers’ reviews. Opting for a change of course, I found myself extending my stay in Chiang Mai. With time ticking away, a decision to realign my travel itinerary became imperative, steering me towards the skies if I were to go through the countries on my checklist.
Taking Flight with Lao Airlines: ATR72 Adventures With the Mekong River journey relinquished, I proceeded to book a dual-leg odyssey with Lao Airlines. The first leg, from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang, and then onward to Hanoi, unfolded aboard the ATR72 aircraft. Sporting a 70-passenger capacity in a cosy 2-2 configuration, the ATR72 promised an intimate journey through the clouds. While web-checking wasn’t a convenience at my disposal, the compensatory factor emerged at the airport, where Lao Airlines displayed efficiently on both occasions.
Unexpected Discoveries: Lao Airlines was akin to stepping into the unknown for me. With my professional history predominantly tethered to the Americas, the airline had never registered on my aviation radar. Initially, unfounded assumptions painted a picture of a small, low-cost carrier, a notion further fueled by cautionary tales of a shadowy Lao Airlines web where unfortunate travellers reported being swindled. Contrary to these apprehensions, my personal encounter with Lao Airlines was refreshingly uneventful.
As I stepped onto the aircraft, the exterior exuded a sense of meticulous maintenance and the pristine condition extended seamlessly to the interior, where the ATR72 unfolded great comfort. The crew was warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. To my delight, the airline had an unexpected treat in store. Not only did the journey unfold smoothly, but it also came with a delightful perk, two onboard snacks and complimentary beverages. A generous touch that served as a stark contrast to the frugality often associated with domestic travel in Europe.

One standout feature that distinguished Lao Airlines from many was the inclusivity of baggage in my ticket. With a generous allowance of 20 kilos, more than ample for my needs, the airline effortlessly dismantled the usual stress associated with luggage constraints.
My Airline Rating from 1 – 5 *:
- Service: *****
- Aircraft configuration *****
- Snacks *****
Ask me if you require assistance booking with Lao Airlines. Safe travels and don’t forget to smile
