Lao Airlines is a regional carrier, founded in 1976 and is the national airline of Laos, headquartered in the capital Vientiane. It operates a domestic and regional network to countries that include Cambodia, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea, with a fleet of Airbus 320 and ATR72. The airline does not belong to any of the world airline alliances.
Initially I was planning to cross to Laos by boat via to the slow boat down the Mekong River, but I changed my mind after reading few traveller reviews, I stayed in Chiang Mai longer than originally planned, so I needed to make up the time if I want to check all the countries I had in mind.
I booked the Lao Airlines flight from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang and then on to Hanoi. Both flights on board the ATR72, which a capacity of 70 passengers 2-2 configuration. The airline does not have web-checking available, which is a disadvantage but the service was prompt at the airport on both occasions,
I must say I did not have any perception of this airline before since all my previous job have always been related mostly in the Americas. At the beginning, I thought it was a small low-cost carrier plus I also read some bad reviews about a shadow Lao Airlines web, where apparently people got ripped off. Well, I did not encounter any of that. Instead, I was a pleasantly surprised with the experience.
The aircraft look very well maintained outside and inside, the crew was extremely friendly and welcoming, and on top of that we have two snacks on board and beverages included, this is always a plus if we compare with domestic travel in Europe.
The seats were comfortable and service excellent. Baggage included in my ticket, with a weight allowance of 20 kilos, which was more than enough for me.
My Rating from 1 – 5 *:
- Service: *****
- Aircraft configuration *****
- Snacks *****
